Security test reveals users of 64-bit Windows are being left behind

St. Petersburg, Russia — May 15, 2012. The dismal Proactive Security Challenge results turned in by the big AV (Anti-Virus) players in the most recent Matousec.com 64-bit Windows 7 tests are making us wonder whether security companies are really catering to the needs of 64-bit PC/OS users. Are traditional AV vendors even capable of delivering reliable and robust protection to these users?

I. 64-bit OS security landscape

With the increase of processing power and rapidly dropping memory prices,64-bit systems are firmly in the mainstream (check the latest Steam statistics for gamer-oriented PCs — click OS Version to see the statistics breakdown — x64 systems are used on more than 60% of the modern PCs). Pretty much any computer manufactured in the last three years is capable of running 64-bit Windows, and all high-end systems are 64-bit; the majority of computers today are equipped with hardware that’s best suited and performs best under 64-bit. "Native" 64-bit software makes a full use of the processing power and memory management capabilities in today’s hardware, enabling additional features.
Security-wise, 64-bit systems benefit from the improved native protection implemented in Windows Vista and Windows 7; this improved protection comes from such security mechanisms as mandatory driver signing, kernel patch protection and hardware-based DEP (Data Execution Prevention). These tools are designed to minimize the incidence of rootkits and other powerful and sophisticated malware. Thanks to these and other tools, 64-bitsystems are, at least on the surface, much more solid and secure than their32-bit cousins.
To complement native security protection for 64-bit systems, security vendors have, of course, rushed in to save the 64-bit user from malware enslavement with tools that claim to protect against any and all types of infections. If the results of the 64-bit Matousec.com tests are anything to go by, most of them have failed miserably. The reality is that, far from being more secure than 32-bit users, owners of 64-bit Windows systems are actually lagging in available flexibility and strength of protection.

II. Proactive security test results

The table below aggregates the results of 32-bit and 64-bit system testing for selected products.
Product, participants for Proactive Security Challenges at Matousec.com64-bit score

Bitdefender Total Security 201299754%
PC Tools Internet Security 201269048%
AVG Internet Security 2012333%
McAfee Total Protection 2012323%
By comparing the results of the 64-bit tests (conducted in winter 2011–2012and spring 2012) with the results of the most recent 32-bit tests (roundup test finished in October 2011), it becomes clear that the majority of vendors are falling short when it comes to 64-bit protection. We have to ask ourselves whether it’s a lack of expertise in 64-bit architecture or just laziness on the part of these developers, but either way, users are losing out. And we don’t think that’s fair on anyone.

III. Vendors’ interpretations

It’s even more disheartening to read recent response following the publication of the results (comments are provided in the Latest News for Proactive Security Challenge 64-bit at Matousec.com). Reading between the lines, it seems what they are saying is "give us more time and we’ll come up with a better solution that will be able to pass your tests". Considering that 64-bit Windows systems have been around for more than five years, and Windows 7, the platform adopted for the current test, is a good two and a half years old, it begs the question: how are users supposed to protect themselves in the meantime? And sadly it is not the only vendor taking this position.
All too often, it seems that big security players disregard the need to address penetration and leak tests for 64-bit Windows, which constitute the lion’s share of the tools used in the Matousec studies. These tools simulate typical intrusions by using the attack vectors and breach techniques used by real malware and 0-day threats, unearthing the shortcomings of systems that allow unknown viruses to penetrate current defenses and wreak havoc.
Most security vendors present in the table have historically shied away from putting their products through such tests because they say the additional protections required would sacrifice product usability. In the tradeoff between this kind of usability and increased security, they favor the former.

IV. Agnitum’s view

As a smaller player, we see the situation a little differently. To overcome the potential problems of more user prompts and alerts triggered by the introduction of system integrity controls, we have developed a mechanism of automated response to such events. It enables us to enhance security without getting in the user’s way all the time and asking questions most users have no hope of being able to answer. This has resulted in a formidable 86% pass rate in Matousec.com tests, and we are working on improving this result by analyzing bypass techniques even further.
Looking at the broader picture, the major takeaway from the current Matousec.com report is that the majority of 64-bit systems are vulnerable and exploitable even with a "big-name" security product in place. Only a fraction of the available products deliver acceptable levels of protection. Agnitum, on the other hand, provides high levels of protection for both 32 and 64-bit systems, does so reliably, and doesn’t distinguish between architectures.
Our products are not tweaked to recognize and block simulated attacks; we just monitor the integrity of the environment and stop attacks at their source, whatever techniques they employ. By embracing this kind of proactive approach to combating threats, Outpost delivers more robust and reliable protection against unknown threats than those competing solutions that address predefined malware samples or only adapt to known techniques once they are fully researched.
x86 or x64, Outpost knows its job and makes no lame excuses, no matter what system or testing tool is involved. No false modesty here, we’ve accomplished native protection for both environments and we are sure to keep it up-to-date and proactive.

About VB certification

The VB100 team developed a simple scoring system, splitting problems into levels of severity and rating them depending on whether they occurred in normal use or only in high-stress situations, ranging from "Solid" for products with no issues at all, through "Stable", "Fair" and "Buggy" for those with increasing numbers of minor issues.

In the April 2012 tests, only half of the participating products achieved a rating of "Solid" or "Stable". 28 products were rated only "Fair" or "Buggy".

13 out of 57 products failed to get any kind of certification in this rounds of tests, including F-Secure, Sophos, and TrustPort. Five products were not included in the report due to instability which prevented the test lab from installing and/or using them. Comodo, Symantec (Norton) and WebRoot did not participate in the April 2012 tests.

Anti-malware engine auto-updated to scan JAR and Android apps on-the-fly

St. Petersburg, Russia — January 27, 2012. Users of Outpost Proanti-virus received an automatic minor upgrade for anti-virus engine and virus database. This new engine carries the internal version number 5.4.1 and works smoothly with the latest malware database format (v14).

Update Summary

Anti-malware Engine 5.4.11) Added support for Java Archive and Android application package file formats to the Windows kernel mode engine component.
Now the on-access engine will scan files in this format on-the-fly; support for this format was previously only available through on-demand scanning.

2) Started adjusting detection of samples classified as "grayware".
We have begun reclassifying our existing detections for "grayware" samples (software which is neither fully "clean" nor 100% malware) into three new groups:
  • "unwanted" files — not harmful but potentially unwanted by user (for example, cracks and keygens);
  • "unsafe" files —might be harmful, but there may be a legitimate reason to be on the user’s PC (for example, commercial keyloggers or password crackers);
  • "grayware" — everything else that is not true malware but should be detected (primarily adware).
We will inform you when Outpost anti-malware products will include fully updated "grayware" database.
NB! Outpost Security Suite Pro 7.5.2 Release Candidate version will be available later for download and testing. Watch this space!

Agnitum becomes one of only 5 vendors with 10+ consecutive VB100 awards

Outpost’s Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware now certified for Windows 7 Pro 32-bit

St. Petersburg, Russia — January 12, 2012. Agnitum, developer of PC security solutions since 1999, is pleased to announce that Outpost Security Suite Pro, the company’s flagship Internet security product, has received its tenth VB100 award in a row in the latest Virus Bulletin comparative review, including 100% detection of the extended in-the-wild samples collections.
Agnitum’s Windows-based security products are now acknowledged to be among the most consistently effective in the industry. Every product the company has submitted to Virus Bulletin for Windows testing since January 2010 has received VB100 certification.

Certification details

VB100 December 2011The latest Outpost Security Suite Pro Version 7.5 (Performance Edition) participated in the Windows 7 Professional 32-bit tests conducted by Virus Bulletin in December 2011.
In total, 55 anti-virus and security suite products from 45 vendors were tested on the regular WildList, extended WildList and clean set. Outpost’s most up-to-date anti-malware engine databases in version 7.5 enabled the software to pass the tests with no false positives — a major requirement for VB100 certification.
This time, more than 15 vendors failed the certification tests due to poorin-the-wild malware detection results and/or false positives in the clean set files, including Symantec and PCTools, Comodo, Emsisoft , Ikarus, QuickHeal, and Webroot.

Performance measurements

Outpost was also praised by Virus Bulletin for its clean and clear interface, which provides a good basic set of controls to PC users, and for the optimized subsequent scan performance made possible by the fourth-generation SmartScan technology. Outpost’s scanning speed on a repeat ("warm") scan for archives, binaries and system files, media and documents outperformed almost all competing products.

Agnitum’s Internet security suite also demonstrated a lighter memory usage (in the busy state) than Eset Nod32 Antivirus, eScan Internet Security, Fortinet Forticlient, Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8, QuickHeal Total Security 2012, Trustport Antivirus 2012, and all Symantec and PC Tools products that participated in this particular test.

What’s new in Outpost 7.5?

I. Emphasis on performance improvements to enhance user experience:

Updated anti-virus engine — version 5.3
With the anti-virus engine updated to version 5.3, the Outpost 7.5 antimalware module delivers even greater detection accuracy, in particular against unknown malware.

Faster on-access and on-demand scanning
Internal tests have shown that on-access scanning is twice as fast and on-demand scanning is up to 2.5 times faster than earlier versions.

3x faster web page filtering
In the ongoing struggle to balance ease-of-use with optimal performance, Agnitum engineers have reworked the Web Control and Firewall modules and have achieved lesser PC resource load and 3x faster web page filtering compared to the previous versions. Additionally spyware-site filtering engine is now up to 100 times faster.

SmartScan 4 Speed-Up
The fourth iteration of SmartScan technology enables 3-5 times faster subsequent scans of files and folders for malware.

II. Enhanced security detects sophisticated malware:

New! SmartDecision technology
One of the most exciting new developments, SmartDecision uses non-signature detection to rate every executable file against a number of criteria to determine its authenticity or potential for damage. This technology employs multi-level risk measurements and enables Outpost to provide visual guidance as to the best way to proceed (allow or block), along with a corresponding color code — red, yellow or green.

New! Clipboard and screen content protection
Clipboard content protection (part of Outpost’s award-winning anti-leak technology) now resists so-called "clipboard-loggers", which can grab personal data from the clipboard during a cut-and-paste operation and "screen-loggers" that can send randomly-grabbed screenshots from a user’s PC to an unauthorized recipient.

Improved! Antimalware / eXtended Heuristic Analyzer
HAX (eXtended Heuristic Analyzer) now includes increased — by a factor of more than ten — numbers of indicators and parameters for suspicious programs, which in turn increases the analyzer’s coverage and detection rates.

New! Antimalware / USB protection
To combat malware spread via USB drives through exploitation of the Windows auto-run vulnerability, Outpost 7.5 now includes specific USB protection that can be configured to provide different levels of security from completely blocking the device to freezing particular unverified executables.

New! Firewall protection for the latest mobile broadband devices
Outpost 7.5 provides enhanced filtering for the traffic generated by mobile broadband devices (such as 3G modems) to further safeguard laptops and other portable devices.

The final release versions of Outpost Security Suite Pro, Outpost Firewall Pro and Outpost Antivirus Pro 7.5 are available now at http://www.agnitum.com/products/.

AVG TECHNOLOGIES PRESENTS GLOBAL Q1-2011 SECURITY THREAT REPORT

ANDROID MALWARE GROWING RAPIDLY, BLACKHOLE ATTACKS PEAK AT 800,000 IN ONE DAY AND FACEBOOK TARGETING JUMPS

LONDON AND AMSTERDAM, 20 April, 2011 – AVG Technologies, a leading provider of internet and mobile security, today launched its “AVG Community Powered Threat Report - Q1 2011”, providing insight and background on the trends and developments in the world of online threats.

The trend in Q1-2011 is revealed to be an explosive increase in the overall number of global attacks. Within this, the most notable developments were a major increase in malicious campaigns which exploited the viral nature of Facebook users, which have increased threefold in the last 12 months.

A further area of significant concern is an explosion in Blackhole Exploit Kits, used by criminals to coordinate attacks. During one week in February 2011, Blackhole attacks jumped from a few hundred per day to an overwhelming 800,000 in a day. This activity, combined with soaring levels of Android malware, is marking an increased professionalism in the structure and operations of the organized criminals behind them.

The United States are still the dominant source of spam with English as the main language used in spam messages. However, with a Brazilian ISP as the most used internet provider and Portuguese as the second language, Brazil is a clear runner up.

With smart phones becoming more like computers, the first quarter saw a notable increase in risk for smartphone users and the Android platform in particular; AVG blocked an average of 100,000 spam and phishing text messages per day.

The open source nature of the OS as well as the open-garden approach in allowing users to install software on the mobile device opens the door for hackers to write malicious code. This is why Android users should install additional security solutions such as AVG Mobilation for Android which is helping prevent users from downloading over 10,000 infected applications a day.

“The increasing professionalism behind some of the threats clearly demonstrates the profit that can be made,” saidYuval Ben-Itzhak, Chief Technology Officer, AVG Technologies. “These campaigns are well planned and well funded, therefore; they demand not only for very effective counter technical measures but also for the need to raised awareness among the average user.”

“A Latvian gang was able to bring 600 attack servers online for just a couple of weeks in a highly targeted Blackhole attack. This resulted in over 800,000 detections per day by our servers.” added Ben-Itzhak. “If this amount of investment apparently pays off for these gangs, others will probably follow soon.”

“The fact that the battlefield is extending to mobile, particularly Android, means that people need security that is fitted to the mobile environment,” said Karel Obluk, Chief Scientist, AVG Technologies. “Users need cloud-based protection to offload the process from the mobile device to stay safe while not draining resources on the device. Sophisticated technology, such as AVG Mobilation for Android, provides high-tech solutions to protect users and their valuable data on-the-go.”

ABOUT THE REPORT

The report is based on the Community Protection Network traffic and data followed by research and analysis performed by AVG, over the three-month period. It provides an overview of web, mobile devices, spam risks and threats. The statistics referenced are obtained from the AVG Community Protection Network.

AVG Community Protection Network is an online neighbourhood watch, helping everyone in the community to protect each other. Information about the latest threats is collected from customers who choose to participate in the product improvement program and shared with the community to make sure everyone receives the best current possible protection.

With more than 120 million users using AVG’s various applications provide us with 1.5 billion potential threats to analyze daily. AVG provides strong community protection and each new user who chooses to participate increases the security level of all the community as a whole.
